Data Recovery Service Insights

When searching for a data recovery service provider, millions of websites are claiming to be the expert. It's painful enough to have to click through the first ten sites to understand who's out there and what they offer. But, how do you differentiate between the endless list of data recovery service companies, so that you have the best opportunity to reclaim your data?

If You Don't Already Know

The first thing to help you separate all the sites into two distinct groups is to understand that very few professional data recovery service companies exist; and that there are lots of local IT businesses cross-marketing data recovery service as a side business. If I do my job right, in the next few minutes, you should be able to distinguish a data recovery service specialist from the area computer technician, and know how to use each one to help you recover your data.

Determining Who's Who

The next way to determine who you are dealing with is to try hiring them for another computer related service, besides data recovery service. For example, ask them for a quote to install a data backup system, or inquire about setting up a lot of workstations for the office. When they start asking additional questions, instead of responding, "Sorry, we only do data recovery service and forensic computer investigation cases", you have reached your area 'computer hardware repair man'.

The Role of the Local Computer Shop

Just about everybody considers using the tech nearby or someone within their company when seeking data recovery help, because they want to get back to what they were doing, with the data they have lost, right now!

What you need to know is that these people can help you reclaim your data in two specific ways: By using a drive imaging tool to make a sector clone of your data for safety precautions; and afterwards, by using an automated file recovery software to revive your lost files.

Here's the most important point: You must get the second copy of your data in hand, before letting them attempt the recovery process. The reason being is, if you do not have this backup, and if an irreversible mistake is made, you will most likely have no recourse to get your data back. With the extra cloned drive in your possession, you can always send your drive to an data recovery service group if something like this happens.

Another Way To Differentiate

Here's the quick test to find out if the data recovery service site you are looking at is a pro or not: Does the company you are considering make, not just market, data recovery software? If so, nine out of ten times you have found a full-scale data recovery service company.

How do I know this? Because I have specialized in data forensics and data recovery service for almost two decades, and know the other major players in the industry. They also make recovery utilities: for the home users who cannot afford in-lab data recovery service; and for computer repair shops. These small businesses feed us cases when software fails, or when they receive a dead hard drive that needs clean-room work to recover the data.

Your Final Insight

Time is also an important factor in every data loss situation. To make the data recovery service process go as quickly and smoothly as possible, I suggest that you use all avenues to get your data back as quickly as possible. Here's how…

First, get that second sector-copy of your drive from someone in town. While you are at it, get them to make you a third one, too. Safe-keep the first one; let someone in town try their data recovery techniques on the second; and finally, ship the third one to a professional data recovery service organization. This ensures you are giving yourself the best possible outcome for any data recovery service case.

By the way, while the demand for hard drive data recovery services has dramatically increased, the number of full-scale firms in the industry has still remained small. This means that since there are not many data recovery service experts out there, you will probably not find one in your state, much less in your city or town. So, in the extreme cases, you may have to overnight your drive to one of these data recovery service firms.

The Concise meaning of the term is to extracting lost, deleted data from damaged, failed, corrupted, or inaccessible hard drives when it cannot be accessed normally with the help of various Data Recovery Software available in the market which is capable of recovering data which has been lost due to many reasons.

Reasons of Data Loss

Data Loss is a fatal situation in which you cannot get access to your important data which has been stored on your hard drives. This data can be your Business Documents, Music files, Personal Pictures and important Emails or anything. What’s the reason for such loss and what steps do we take to overcome to this situation? This Question will come to your mind first when your hard drive gets corrupted.

Before proceeding to the preventions we should first take a look to some of the major causes which led to certain stage of disaster.

Major Reasons of Data Loss

• Virus Attacks - “Virus Attacks increases at the rate of nearly 300-500 new Trojans and viruses every month”. In daily life you are at an ever-increasing risk to become infected with a virus. To prevent yourself against a viral threat is to install an Anti-virus program on your system and scan it regularly to keep yourself update whether your system is infected.

• Hardware or System Problems - When powering on your computer you might hear clicking, buzzing, scrapping and ratting sounds. These are the noises that come when the motor, electronic boards or magnetic platters get damaged due to any electric failure or a head crash. Alternately, the drive might also refuse to spin and results in inaccessible data.

• Human Error - Accidental deletion and overwriting is one of the main reason of data loss that more often happens. This event occurs when you overwrite any existing data or emptied the recycle bin. This is the data loss event of human error category.

• Software Malfunction - Data can also be lost due to some technical defect of failure of some software running on the computer.

• Natural Disaster – Natural disaster can have devastating effect on the physical drive. Data Recovery Software rescued data from fires, floods, lightening strikes and subsequent power surges. The best way to prevent your important data from the arrival of such an unpredictable event is to keep the backup of your documents once in a week.

Data Loss and Data Recovery - An Overview

Data stored on computers can get lost in several ways. To recover from such a situation the main option would be to restore from backed up data.Alternatively calling on the services of a specialist data recovery company. Reconstructing all the lost data manually is usually not a viable option.

Reconstruction will involve:

Locating the original documents or specifications,

Huge amounts of data entry, and

Serious disruption to the business during the reconstruction period

The cost of such an exercise can seem very expensive, but without it's being done a company's viability can be put at risk.

This is the context in which data recovery becomes a significant issue. Before we look at data recovery, let us take a brief look at how data gets lost.

How Does Data Get Lost?

Data stored on computer media can get lost in different ways, including:

User actions such as deleting data unintentionally, carelessly, or even deliberately for malicious or financial gain

Loss of removable media such as CD/DVD on which valuable data were stored (see UK Revenue and Customs, DVLA, Banks and Building Societies etc ) /li>

Administration and other human errors leading to loss of valuable data (e.g leaving primary data on a laptop not backed up which can be at risk of theft.)

Power supply problems leading to system malfunctions that cause data damage

System crashes leading to incomplete sessions and loss of data

Hardware problems causing incorrect or incomplete write operations

Corrupted media or databases making recorded data unreadable

Natural disasters like fire, flood or earthquake destroying the computer facilities

Data loss caused by malicious external agents like viruses and hackers

Pilferage of physical media or equipment such as laptop computers

Studies indicate that almost three quarters of data loss is caused by hardware failure and human errors. It is in these cases that data recovery becomes a viable option.

Data recovery is not possible where the media storing the data has been lost and there are no backups available.

Preventing Data Loss

USER EDUCATION: Training your staff in various aspects of computer operations can minimize data losses, particularly losses caused through human errors, which are a major cause of data loss. Staff can be trained to take the necessary precautions, such as backing up, antivirus checking, working through firewalls, but there should always be someone in charge the security of data.

BACKUP: The impact of data loss can be minimized through well-implemented data backup procedures. The qualification "well-implemented" is important. Often, data backup is done in a routine manner without checking whether a full data recovery is possible in case original data is lost.

Data backup might not be up to date. Data in backup media can prove irrecoverable owing to improper backing up or media corruption. It is important to make regular reviews and tests of both back up procedures and backed up data to ensure that the data is indeed recoverable if it becomes necessary.

Storing backed up data in a location away from the primary data location can help in such cases as a fire / flood or other natural disaster.

ANTI VIRUS & FIREWALL SOFTWARE: Anti virus software, if kept up to date, can help guard against virus attacks. Firewalls can stop most hackers from hacking into your systems.

REDUNDANT MEDIA AND WRITE OPERATIONS: Data is written to more than one media device or location so that if one of them fails, the other can be used to repair the damage.

Data Recovery

Where a proper backup system is in place, lost data can be recovered to a greater or lesser extent using the backups. The speed of such recovery will depend on the kind of backup media used. Where the backup media is online, such as in RAID systems, or Web-based third party facilities, data recovery can be quick.

At the other extreme, where data is stored on magnetic tapes at locations away from the primary site, data recovery could be a time-consuming exercise and may need to be shipped or couriered to the main location.

Where backups are not available or unsatisfactory, you have to depend on data recovery software or data recovery specialists. Data recovery software might be able to recover deleted files and repair corrupted directories. However, more serious data losses are likely to need the services of data recovery companies with expertise and specialized facilities, like Class 100 (Iso 5) Clean Rooms.

Data recovery companies extract the raw image from the disk and might try different techniques such as file system recovery, replacing damaged hardware components with compatible healthy ones, and reprogramming the firmware. These are technically involved and often delicate procedures requiring considerations to dust and electrostatic discharge (esd) in order to recover as much of the data as possible.

Conclusion

Data loss can occur owing to numerous factors and is something that has to be planned against. Training your computer personnel, proper back up procedures and use of anti-virus and firewall software are some of the measures you can take to guard against data loss.

If these measures are absent or prove inadequate, you may have to approach external data recovery specialists, with the expertise and facilities to recover lost data.

Data Recovery From Failed Seagate 7200.11 Hard Disks

Seagate have confirmed there is a memory leak problem in the new 7200.11 series of hard drives and have already issued a firmware update. The problem stems from a memory bug where the cache size is not reported correctly.

If you are lucky enough to have found this out before your disk drive has failed, then get onto the Seagate website and download firmware update (if it is appropriate), or search for 'Seagate 7200.11 firmware update' on Google.

According to Seagate, the problem affects the following drives..
500 GB : ST3500320AS
750 GB : ST3750330AS
1000 GB : ST31000340AS

Reports on the Seagate forum show that there may be a similar problem with the 1.5 TB version of the drive.

If your hard disk has failed, then you will need a data recovery company, such as MjM Data Recovery Ltd in the UK who, at the time of writing, are one of only a handful of companies in the world that are able to repair the drives in order to recover the data. A link to MjM is provided above.

Other problems that have been reported with 7200.11 drives are..

1. The drive hangs during start up or;
2. The drive reports as 0 MB.

MjM Data Recovery can also recover data from all other manufacturers of hard disk and other storage equipment and are usually the first company able to recover when new problems arise.

They were also first when there were problems with the translator in Seagate SCSI drives and (according to their website) repair these drives for customers all over the world.
